We're building drafting technology that's transforming the way the world contracts. Our platform helps legal teams move faster through contracts using automation and AI, without taking judgement away from the lawyers in control. We believe technology should amplify expertise, not replace it.
Avvoka is trusted by over 20% of the AmLaw 100 law firms, global banks and enterprises, and we've grown largely through product strength. With headcount and revenue continuing to scale rapidly year on year, we're now moving from a product-led path into a globally recognised legal-tech brand. We're at an inflection point: evolving how the world's most sophisticated legal teams work, and building a company where thoughtful people can do the best work of their careers.
This is a rare opportunity to build the Avvoka brand from the ground up, not inherit it. You'll be part of a small, ambitious team with the freedom to create, experiment and raise the bar for legal tech. You'll work alongside smart, supportive people who move fast and care deeply about quality. If you're motivated by ownership, pace and visible impact, you'll feel at home here.
We're looking for a Markup Editor to join the Document Automation Specialist (DAS) department. This role sits at the intersection of legal expertise and document automation, you'll interpret raw or precedent drafts provided by clients and produce structured, annotated markup that defines exactly how each document should be automated and conditioned.
Markup Editors are legal experts first. Your work reduces the volume of clarification questions needed during the automation phase, ensures consistency of output across template types, and underpins the overall quality of everything the DAS team delivers. The markup you produce is the reference that Template Developers build from, and that the QA team validates against.
Markup and legal interpretation
Receive and review raw legal drafts or precedent documents provided by clients through CS/Sales.
Interpret how legal provisions should be structured, conditioned, and automated, making expert judgements on clause-level logic, optional provisions, and variable content.
Organise questionnaire structure and questions drafting so they are clear and make sense for end users.
Produce clear, structured markup in line with the department's standard markup format, defining what needs to be automated, how variables should behave, and what conditions apply to each provision.
Handle complex practice areas with precision, ensuring that nuanced legal provisions are correctly represented in the markup.
Identify and flag ambiguities in client-provided drafts before markup is handed to Template Developers.
Collaborate closely with QA team and with Customer Success Delivery & Automation Lead.
Standards and consistency
Follow and maintain the standard markup format to ensure consistency across all templates and team members.
Contribute to the development and refinement of markup standards as new document types, client requirements, or automation capabilities emerge.
Ensure that markup is comprehensive enough that Template Developers can implement it without requiring frequent clarifications.
A willingness to embrace AI tools where they create genuine efficiency gains, always with a mindset of responsible use, client privacy, and data security.
Client engagement and requirement gathering
Participate in calls with clients to discuss automation projects, walk through source documents, and clarify requirements before markup begins.
Ask the right questions to uncover intent behind legal provisions, especially where drafts are ambiguous, incomplete, or rely on unstated assumptions.
Build rapport with client legal teams, acting as a credible legal peer who understands both the document and its automation context.
Document outcomes from client calls clearly and translate them into actionable markup annotations.
Cross-team collaboration
Work closely with CS/Sales to understand client intent and clarify requirements where the source draft is incomplete or ambiguous.
Liaise with Template Developers as needed to clarify markup intent during the automation phase.
Support the QA team by acting as the reference point for markup interpretation when queries arise.
Provide input on automation feasibility for complex provisions, collaborating with Template Developers on edge cases.
Maintenance and improvements
Review and update markup for templates already in production that require changes or improvements.
Maintain version-controlled markup records to support traceability and audit.
The ideal candidate would have:
Qualified solicitor, paralegal background, or equivalent legal professional, with experience drafting or reviewing legal documents.
Strong knowledge of at least one practice area (e.g. corporate, real estate, employment, finance, or commercial contracts).
Ability to interpret complex legal provisions and translate them into structured, logic-driven annotations.
High attention to detail, able to identify inconsistencies, ambiguities, or gaps in source drafts.
Strong written communication skills, with the ability to produce precise, unambiguous instructions for non- legal colleagues.
Confident on client calls, able to lead structured conversations with legal professionals to extract requirements and resolve ambiguities.
Comfortable working in a structured, process-driven environment with defined markup conventions.
Bonus points if:
Prior experience with document automation platforms (e.g. Avvoka, HotDocs, Contract Express).
Familiarity with conditional logic or structured templating concepts, even at a non-technical level.
Experience in legal operations, legal technology, or a client-facing legal advisory role.
Exposure to multi-client or multi-jurisdiction documentation environments.
